The Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports/Sugarbush alpine race team competed at the Special Olympic Winter Games held March 9 through 10 at Suicide Six, S. Pomfret, Vermont.
Nine athletes competed in the slalom, giant slalom and super G events including local athletes Phillip Kellum, Christopher Riley and Grace Kirpan of Moretown; Jakob Kingsbury of Waitsfield, Tommy Johnson of Warren. Bennett Townley of Williston, Gabriel Teran of Montpelier, Josh Bartold of East Montpelier and Lelia Volmer of Craftsbury.
Competing in the advanced division 3, Kellum placed fifth in slalom, fourth in giant slalom, and won the silver medal in super G. In advanced division 4, Townley won silver in slalom, gold in giant slalom and gold in super G.
Competing in their respective divisions for the intermediate races: Bartold won gold in slalom, silver in GS and silver in super G. Johnson placed sixth in slalom, received a ribbon in GS and won gold in super G. Teran placed fourth in slalom, won the bronze medal in GS, and silver medal in super G. Kirpan placed fifth in slalom, fourth in GS, and fifth in super G. Riley won bronze in slalom, placed fourth in GS, and won gold in super G. Volmer received ribbons in slalom and GS and won a bronze medal in super G. Competing in the intermediate snowboard division, Kingsbury won silver medals in slalom, GS, and super G.
The athletes thanked head coach Henry Erikson, course coach Norm Staunton and the volunteers at Vermont Adaptive who helped coach.
