HU's Kyle Streeter wins at Essex and Colchester
Harwood Union High School senior Kyle Streeter placed first at both the Michael J. Baker Wrestling Classic in Essex on January 20 and the Colchester Invitational meet on January 26 in the 220-pound weight bracket. Kaegan Pearsall, a junior at Harwood, took second place at both tournaments at 170 pounds.
Streeter defeated Maine state champion Josh Andrews from Massabesic, ME, in the finals at Essex and Luke Mckee from Peru, NY, at the Colchester tourney.
Harwood freshmen wrestlers Travis Streeter, David Howes, Brandon Hamilton, Ronnie Gilman, Nate Stanley and Kyle Jasinksi also participated in the tournaments.
A record number of teams participated at the Essex tournament, including seven from Maine, one from New York, one from Massachusetts and many from Vermont.
The Harwood wrestling team’s upcoming schedule includes a tournament at Mount Mansfield Union on February 2 and the NVAC Elite tournament at Mount Abraham on February 9.
Harwood Nordic skier wins Ethan Allen pursuit
On Friday, January 25, Harwood sophomore Nathanael Kuzio shocked the best Nordic skiers from Chittenden County by winning the Mt. Mansfield Pursuit Race held at the Ethan Allen Center for Excellence in Jericho, VT.
The pursuit format is a combination of both classic and skate (freestyle techniques). Skiers ski a 2.6 km classic ski course, change equipment (while the clock is running) and ski another 2.6 km using the skating technique.
“I knew Nathanael had a shot at winning,” said Harwood Nordic coach John Kerrigan. Nathanael is a biathlete (skate technique and shooting). I knew if he kept it close after the classic leg, he would be in the hunt for first during the skate leg due to his strong skating experience from biathlon training. I think even Nathanael was surprised when he came through the classic leg with a comfortable lead. He increased the lead and beat over 100 of the best skiers from across the state.”
“In my 30-plus years of coaching Harwood Nordic, this is the first time we have had an athlete win a pursuit race of this caliber,” said Kerrigan.
Brennan Degen also had a fine race, despite experiencing frostbite on both hands. Degen finished 30th. Other top skiers for HU were Marcus Helmken (50th) and Phillip Hekeler (54th).
India Harvey led the Harwood girls with a 23rd-place finish, despite getting tripped up 100 meters from the finish. Ellie Ramsey (41st), Paige Gaylord (51st) and Alice Woodruff (74th) helped the Harwood girls to a strong finish.
Harwood Nordic trails have survived the latest thaw and the team has been able to train right out their back door.
“We have been lucky; many of my fellow coaches have been complaining that they have to travel to find skiable snow. Let’s hope our trails hold up until the state meet in late February,” said Kerrigan.
Harwood alpine results

On Saturday January 26, the Harwood Union alpine teams competed at Lincoln Peak in a two-run slalom competition hosted by South Burlington. For the Harwood girls it was another good day on the slopes finishing second only to a solid CVU team.
Callie Anderson, 4th, Amy Graham, 6th, Sophie Dasaro, 12th, and Mercedes Woolley, 13th, all put together two good runs and gave the team a fine overall performance. Maddie Lowe, 20th, Ashley McNeish, 22nd, Isabella Harris, 26th, Sarah Wry, 37th, Molly O’Shea, 38th, Regan McMann, 39th, and Anna Belongia, 51st, all competed for Harwood in the meet.
John Egan, skiing in his first race for the boys’ team, finished 13th overall in a field of 75 boys. Hobey Weston, 32nd, Malcolm Purinton, 40th, also in his first race for the team, Matt Crowell, 51st, and Asah Whalen, 55th, competed for the Harwood boys.
The teams head to Mt. Ellen on Thursday for a GS on Inverness; start time is noon.
