ALPINE SKIING

This year’s team:

The Harwood girls’ team returns with a solid core of skiers from last season. Team captain and four-year team member Molly O’Shea leads the Harwood ladies. She is joined by Amy Graham, Ashley McNeish, Sarah Wry, Regan McMann and Sophie Dasaro. Freshmen Callie Anderson, Mercedes Woolley, Maddie Lowe, Anna Belognia, Maddie McGeorge and Isabella Harris have also added to the talent and depth of the team.

The Harwood boys’ alpine team returns just three skiers from last year’s talented, senior-laden team, but Matt Crowell, Hoby Weston and Alec McGlynn are all back for their second season on the team. So far, these three skiers are off to a strong start and will be the nucleus of this year’s team. Newcomers Asah Whalen, Mike Dempsey and John Eagan Jr. complete the boys’ roster for the 2012-13 race season.

Recent results:

On Friday, January 4, Harwood’s alpine ski team hosted a two-run slalom at Mad River Glen. The Harwood girls’ team had their second win in a row, and they are currently undefeated in the early season. The Harwood boys’ team skied well to place fourth overall in a field of eight teams.

Callie Anderson came in second overall, leading the Harwood girls’ team. Sarah Wry came in 10th, Mercedes Woolley, 12th, Amy Graham, 13th, Sophie Dasaro, 14th, and Maddie Lowe, 15th, and gave the team a win over rival Lyndon by just three points. Ashley McNeish, 18th, Maddie McGeorge, 20th, Anna Belognia, 35th in her first race ever, and Regan McMann all skied well, showing the great depth of this year’s girls’ team.

For the boys, sophomore Matt Crowell put together two solid runs to place fourth overall in a field of 65 skiers. Hoby Weston, 7th, Alec McGlynn, 13th, and Asah Whalen, who came in 60th in his first ski race ever, gave the team a good finish in a competitive meet.

The team will compete this Saturday at Lincoln Peak in a giant slalom competition.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

This year’s team:

Harwood varsity girls’ basketball team has six returning players: sophomore Jennifer James, junior Peyton Burr, seniors Kassy Bickford and Sabrina Burbank and senior captains Mandy Milne and Michaela O'Brien. Two seniors, Jaime Thomas and Sarah Bodell, have come back to the team after taking last year off, and sophomore Lauren Harper has moved up from the junior varsity team.

According to Coach Garret Folson, this year’s team is “a great group of girls,” led by captains Milne and O'Brien. Milne, a point guard, has played very well to start the year and is doing a great job of getting all five players on the court involved, and O'Brien has been the go-to scorer and has been playing with a lot of energy.

Burbank brings an excellent jump shot and strong defense and rebounding skills to the team, and James, a second-year varsity player as only a sophomore, has a great shot and court awareness. Burr joins them to fill out the starting five, and she has done a wonderful job at attacking the basket and looking for teammates.

Bickford is a very good post defender and brings a nice mid-range jump shot to the offensive side of the ball. Thomas is an excellent defender who uses her quickness to disrupt the opposition, and she’s also done a wonderful job playing two different guard positions. Sarah Bodell always seems to be in the right spot, and she plays solid defense and has a good shot. Harper is quickly adjusting to varsity competition. She has learned quickly and put together back-to-back games that can only be described as excellent.

Recent results:

The girls’ season started off with a 42-37 win at Northfield. Sabrina Burbank (16 points) and Michaela O'Brien (10 points) led the team, which continued on to put in its highest scoring game of the season beating Division I Mt. Mansfield 55-39. In that game, Michaela O'Brien scored 20 points—a team high for the season—and Peyton Burr chipped in eight points as well.

The girls improved their record to 3-0 after beating Vergennes 45-25 on December 18. Michaela O'Brien once again led the way with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Sabrina Burbank just missed a double-double with 9 points and 11 rebounds.

The team suffered its first loss 33-29 against Williamstown on December 21. O'Brien continued her strong season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Sabrina Burbank and Jennifer James contributed eight and seven points, respectively.

As the calendar turned to January, the team opened Capital League playing defending Division III state champion Oxbow. The girls pulled out a 45-37 victory on the strength of a well-played first. Once again, O'Brien, Burbank and James led the scoring, but Milne and Harper each played very well.

On January 7, the team played a very strong U-32 team and lost 53-33. In the loss, O'Brien and Harper led the team with eight points each, and Jaime Thomas put forth an impressive defensive performance getting four steals.

The team’s next game is scheduled for Friday, January 11, at Harwood Union, which will host Lyndon with the junior varsity game starting at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game starting at 7 p.m.
