On Tuesday, October 2, two busloads of Harwood cross-country runners descended on the Peoples Academy campus in Morrisville for a required Mountain Division meet. Required, because all league schools must attend. The NVAC East or Mountain Division includes schools that extend as far north as Newport, as far east as Bradford on the NH border. It includes small Division 3 schools and Division 1 powerhouse St. Johnsbury Academy.
Harwood runners had an impact on all four races of the day. Seventh-grader Erin Magill placed second in the girls’ middle school race. Anthony Palmerio, Morgan Baughman and Colin Fennely ran to a 1, 4, 6 finish in the middle school boys’ race. The Harwood middle school boys gave coach Tanner Revoir a huge victory over the 10-team field.
Harwood girls, led by Jaime Thomas 4, India Harvey 14, Marla Davidson 16, and Alice Woodruff 18, placed a close second to Division 1 powerhouse St. Johnsbury.
Harwood boys were led by the Highlander straight flush: Geoffrey Kazlow 3, Sam Nishi, 4 Nathaniel Kazlow 5 and Nathanael Kuzio 6. The Highlander boys surprised perennial favorite St. J.
The course was flat and fast. “Although we dominated today, the runners seemed a little flat. We are just coming off a spectacular weekend race in Belfast, Maine,” said Harwood coach Kerrigan.
“We will be rested and ready to defend our Co-Ed title next weekend. Our course is in awesome shape thanks to the work of parent volunteers. The runners are looking forward to their first home meet of the season,” said Kerrigan.
