Varsity boys’ lacrosse
The varsity boys’ lacrosse team has played three games in the last week. The first was on May 17 against Randolph and Kaile Daley led the scoring with four goals. Liam O’Toole scored three goals and several other players contributed one or two goals each. Jake Lockett saved four attempts from the other team, and the final score was 15-6 with Harwood as the winner. The next game was the following day against Stowe. Lockett made five tough saves and Daley again led the scoring with three goals. However, Jack O’Shea’s single goal won the game in double overtime. The final score was 7-6. Their most recent game was on May 21 at Rice. Conor Lyons was the top scorer with three goals and Lockett again saved five goals. The team worked well together but was unable to secure the win, losing 7-10.
Golf
The girls’ golf team traveled to Newport on May 14 for the Newport Invitational. Three girls competed: Mandy Milne with a score of 90, Becca Hamel (100) and Kianna Haskins (129). Peoples Academy, Burlington, Essex, Lake Region, North Country and MVU all competed as well with independents from Milton and Lamoille. Harwood won the tournament with a team score of 190. Second place was taken by Peoples Academy (204) and third was taken by Burlington (208). The independent from Lamoille, Lydia Beach, was a medalist with a score of 85. The boys’ golf team also won at St. Johnsbury with a score of 166 against Lyndon (174) and Montpelier (191). Brooks Curran led Harwood with a score of 38 and he was also a medalist. Erik Bertalan (40), Willie MacGowan (42), and Nick Wright (46) also competed for Harwood.
Varsity girls’ lacrosse
The varsity girls’ lacrosse team has played several games in the past few weeks. On May 5, they played Oxbow. Thea Cohen and Taylor Yandow were the top scorers with two goals each and Emma Cummings saved an outstanding 30 goals. The game was very competitive, but Oxbow was just a little better at keeping control of the ball and defeated Harwood 13-7. On May 10, Harwood played GMVS. Yandow was again the top scorer with an amazing eight goals and Cummings saved 14 goals. Both teams were very aggressive, but the advantage went to Harwood for their ability to control the ball early in the game. The final score was 15-12, Harwood. They played again the next day against St. Johnsbury. Chelsea Stanclift and Michaela O’Brien were the top scorers with four goals each. It was a tough game on both teams and the lead went back and forth as the game progressed. The last goal was made by Harwood at 59 seconds left and they won with a final score of 15-13.
Varsity girls’ tennis
Due to many postponed and make-up matches, the varsity girls’ tennis team played 9 matches in 11 days. They lost to Montpelier by a landslide, 0-7, on May 10 but then won both matches of a double header against North Country the next day. The first match was 6-1; the second was 5-2. On May 14, they traveled to Spaulding where they played another double header with pro-sets, a single eight-game set instead of best two of three sets. In the first match, Ally Behn (1) and Sophie Rayfield (2) both won 8-0, and Chase Fortier (4), Jenna Golden (5), Amy Graham/Mia Burfoot (1 doubles), and Emily Hewitt/Grace Hurwitz (2 doubles) also won. The second match saw the team a bit rearranged, but the score ended up being 7-0. Next Harwood played U-32 and won 7-0. The match after was a very close one against Colchester, though Harwood lost 3-4. Middlebury also defeated Harwood 5-2, and the most recent match was against Lake Region. Hadley Laskowski (3) had the toughest of the seven matches but pulled through and won her match 4-6, 6-4, 10-6. The overall score of that match was 7-0. Harwood’s record is 8-5.
