JV baseball
The JV baseball team recently played a double header on April 27. It was away and they played against Randolph. Adam Lamson pitched the first game very well and Riley Abair had two hits. However, Randolph won the first game 6-1. In the second game, Dylan Bailey pitched and also did very well. The game was incredibly close for the first five innings, but then it suddenly opened up. Randolph won the second game as well, 14-2. The team has another game at Lyndon on Friday, May 11.
Varsity boys’ lacrosse
The varsity boys’ lacrosse team played against Stowe last week in a tough game. They scored five points in the first two quarters but then couldn’t score for the rest of the game. It was a close game but Stowe took the win 6-5. The next day Harwood played Montpelier and enjoyed a satisfying win. Kaile Daley scored four goals and Max Beilke, in particular, played great defense. The final score was 10-5. Most recently they played on Monday against GMVS. It was a struggle and they spent eight full minutes in the penalty box in the second half alone. The players found it difficult to keep up with the speed of GMVS’s offense, but they played the best they could. GMVS earned the win 12-6.
Boys’ and girls’ golf
The boys’ and girls’ golf teams have played three matches recently. The first was against Montpelier, with Randolph competing as well. The best score for HU boys was Brooks Curran with 41 and the best for girls was Mandy Milne with 44. Overall, Harwood won with 180 points versus Montpelier’s 185 and Randolph’s 232. The second match put Harwood against Lake Region and Lyndon. Curran and Willy MacGowan both scored a 43 for HU and Milne scored a 46. Harwood finished second overall with 177 against Lyndon’s 169 and Lake Region’s 204. Their most recent match was against Peoples Academy and Lyndon. Curran again was the lowest scorer for HU with 37, and Milne and Becca Hamel contributed well to the girls’ team with 48 and 56 points, respectively. The match finished with Peoples having 152 points and Lyndon having 165. Harwood placed second overall again with 160 points.
Varsity boys’ tennis
The varsity boys’ tennis team has a 6-2 record so far this season. They have won against Rice, Spaulding, BFA twice, Montpelier and Middlebury. Their two losses were to St. Johnsbury and U-32. Coach Josh Hanna said, “We have had a great team effort this year with wins from everyone on the team!” Sophomore Connor Barker plays number-one singles on the team and is undefeated. Captain Gerrit Lane plays second. Ben Laskaris, Pierre Compere, Win Parker and Chase Johnson all play singles as well. Johnson also plays doubles with Emeric Rochford, Gregg Skowronski, Josh Seckler, Hobey Weston and Brin Schoellkopf. The team is looking forward to keeping up their winning record and having fun playing excellent tennis.
Track and field
At the moment the track team is still settling in and determining which events the athletes are best suited. One meet they competed in was at Essex with five other teams and both the boys and girls took second of the six teams, behind only Essex itself. There was also a freshman/sophomore meet hosted by Harwood. The boys won and the girls took second behind U-32. Most recently was the Burlington Invitational which was competed in by only some athletes as it was focused more on individuals than a whole team. Still, Harwood placed 15th of 29 teams and 3rd of Division II teams. Coach Taggert Haslam said, “We have had great effort by everyone who has competed.”
Varsity girls’ tennis
Due to several canceled and postponed matches, the varsity girls’ tennis team has only played four matches, winning two of them. The first was against Montpelier, and Harwood lost all seven of the matches, making the score 0-7. In the next two matches the team was missing their number-one player, Ally Behn, forcing everyone to move up a spot. Despite this, Harwood defeated U-32 with a match score of 4-3. Sophie Rayfield (2), Shelby Parette (3), Chase Fortier (4) and Jenna Golden (5) played the four winning matches. Against Middlebury, Harwood lost 3-4, with Fortier (4), Mia Burfoot/Amy Graham (first doubles), and Haley Behn/Megan Meany (second doubles) playing the winning matches for Harwood. The most recent match was against BFA, which Harwood won 5-2. Hadley Laskowski (2), Rayfield (3), Parette (4), Burfoot/Graham (first doubles), and Behn/Meany (second doubles) played the winning matches. Their next match is on Friday, May 11, against North Country at the Bridges Resort.
