This year’s Tomato War is slated for October 7 through 9 off of German Flats Road in Warren.
The event isn’t technically a fundraiser, though in the past any leftover money has been donated to the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service.
This year organizers are looking for local participants to join in the Tomato War in hopes of raising money to benefit Valley disaster relief efforts. The group is seeking local sponsors to participate in this year’s event.
The tradition started over 50 years ago and has developed into an organized annual event comprised of competitors from Massachusetts and New York.
It’s basically a giant game of capture the flag amongst two teams, red and yellow. Teams are armed with a bag of tomatoes and wear wristbands in place of flags.
If a competitor is hit, his or her wristband is surrendered to the person that made the hit. The war begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 8, and finishes at 5 p.m.
