It was an odd game in that Harwood was actually outhit by the Commodores, 2-1. Randi Lowe had Harwood's lone hit. Hannah Lovely and Chelsea Delphia were each credited with RBIs on the afternoon. Ashley Sweet was the winning pitcher, gaining her 41st victory of her career. It is strongly believed that she is the winningest pitcher in Harwood school history.
The game was played on Harwood's Senior Day, where all the seniors are honored after the game is over. The Lady Highlanders traditionally gather for a picnic style cookout with their respective families. Words of praise are mentioned, games are played and flowers are given to the young ladies. The event usually is quite emotional. This year was no different as there were seven seniors honored and most had been in the Harwood system since they were 11 years old.
The Harwood victory left the team with a 14-1 record for 2009. The Highlanders are ranked second in Division 2. They received a first round bye and await the winner of the Lamoille/Milton game. The quarterfinals will be played on Saturday, June 6, at 4 p.m. at the Dac Rowe Field.
The Lady Highlanders thanked their loyal fans for their continued support as they continue their march toward Poultney in hopes of the school's first championship since 1980.
