Girls’ varsity basketball
The girls’ varsity basketball team has had a rough two weeks. They have played four games but lost them all, suffering from the lack of a full team due to hurt and sick players. On January 20, they played Montpelier and lost 42-32 with Sabrina Burbank and Jennifer James leading the scoring with 10 and 9 points, respectively.
Against Lyndon on January 24, they were missing three significant players; while they played excellently, considering each player’s increased role, the girls eventually lost 54-26.
The varsity girls played Randolph on January 26, working hard to keep the game fairly close while several players were still sick. Jennifer James and Anna Benard led the scoring, but Harwood ended up losing 49-37.
In their most recent game against U-32 on January 28, Michaela O’Brien led the team with an amazing 17 points and 11 rebounds, along with four steals. Unfortunately, U-32 pulled ahead and won 53-30.
Hopefully, the general health of the team will improve and they will have more victories.
Boys’ hockey
The boys’ hockey team played perhaps their best game of the year against Spaulding, ranked sixth in the league, on January 28. Erik Bertalan scored two goals with assists from Kaile Daley and Ryan VanTuinen.
Sam Boylan scored a third goal from the other end of the rink; the puck traveled 150 feet and past Spaulding players into the net. The player of the game, according to coach Dave Morse, was goalie Ben Nussbaum, who stopped two breakaways and saved an incredible 31 shots of 32 by Spaulding. The final score was 3-1, an outstanding victory for Harwood.
JVA boys’ basketball
On January 24, Harwood’s JVA boys’ basketball team played U-32 in an excellent game. Harwood scored 32 points in the second quarter alone, 13 of which were by Geoffrey Kazlow.
The lead scorers of the team were Kazlow and Matt Fischer, both scoring 20 points. The final score was 63-43. On January 30, they played Montpelier with a man-to-man defense, causing their opponents to lose possession of the ball many times.
The lead scorers in that game were Nathaniel Kazlow (15) and Matt Fischer (12). The final winning score was 56-40, improving their season record to an impressive 10-1.
Nordic
The Harwood Nordic ski team hosted their first race at the Waterbury State Complex on January 26 with over 100 skiers competing. They raced around a lit quarter-mile track, with some corners that were tight, dark and icy, which made the race more exciting.
The boys’ varsity race came down to a tight sprint between Nathanael Kuzio and Brennan Degen of Harwood and Ethan John and Liam John of Essex. Ethan John crossed the finish line first, followed closely by Kuzio, Liam John and finally Degen in fourth.
The girls’ varsity race was led quite clearly by Harwood’s Grace Butler, who finished far ahead of Burlington’s Andrea Noonan and Callie Flynn, both excellent skiers.
For the JVs, Anna Bauer finished first for girls and claimed her first victory while Sam Nishi and Caleb Kessler, both of Harwood, fought in the boys’ race. The lead went back and forth before Nishi inched past Kessler to finish first. It was altogether an exciting and satisfying race for Harwood.
