Harwood’s Owen Labombard scored the game-winning goal to edge the Highlanders past Green Mountain Valley School (GMVS).
On Saturday, October 7, Harwood made the short trip to GMVS for the intertown rivalry. Harwood was coming off a strong 11-0 win against Randolph and they have now improved their record to 5-2.
“We finished so many opportunities midweek in that big goal game. We created a lot of chances today and we just didn’t finish, I can’t imagine 10 percent of what we created,” Harwood coach Don Haddox said on Saturday.
The annual game between Harwood and Green Mountain Valley School is always incredibly competitive, Haddox said. No matter how the teams are playing or what their respective records are the match is always close. Many athletes on both sides grew up together and have played on the same team before high school.
Haddox said his team played a simple style of soccer and that helped them take the win on Saturday.
“I think that we decided to play a simpler version of the game with more refined, scaled-down roles and we were able to be successful a little more often in that pared-back version,” Haddox said. “We’re trying to do things that we are more capable of doing.”
Harwood’s next game is this Friday, October 13, at Lyndon Institute.
