Harwood’s baseball team was off to a rocky start after dropping their first three games, but they finally took a win over Northfield in a staggering 17-0 victory.
On Thursday, April 27, the Harwood Highlanders lost another close game to Thetford 7-6, and it must have stuck with them. When they stepped onto the field two days later for their Saturday morning game against Northfield they couldn’t make a single mistake.
The Highlanders quickly hit themselves into a huge 10-run lead. They were able to practically coast by off the back of their starting pitcher, Beckett Richardson, after that.
Richardson played all five innings giving up just one hit and no runs. The game was called early due to a 15-run rule, whereby the losing team can decide whether they want to continue play.
Harwood coach Mitch Casey said the only thing he didn’t like about the day was the early wake-up; other than that everything went perfectly.
“I’m the kind of coach that directs during the game. I let them play. And I always try to encourage them to have fun when they play and that’s what having fun is,” Casey said of the win.
“After today I think you’ll see a different team. It finally struck them,” Casey said.
It wouldn’t be the first time that the Harwood baseball team turned around a poor start. Just last year they started with four losses and finished 10-5 en route to the semifinal game.
Their next game is Thursday, May 4, at home against Lamoille.
