The Harwood’s boys’ soccer team defeated Division I opponent Spaulding 2-1 Tuesday evening, September 13, to move to 1-0-1 for the season.

In the 69th minute, Wyatt Adams sent a ball from midfield just past the Spaulding defenders, leading Austin Taylor to speed past them and put the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

“I just gotta get the ball and score,” Taylor said he was thinking just before receiving the pass.

Harwood controlled possession throughout the game leading to many scoring opportunities throughout the evening. Teams do not always execute their game plans when game time comes, but on Tuesday night everything went Harwood’s way.

Harwood goalie Max Hill was only forced to make four saves, while the Highlanders made Spaulding goalie Brad Remo save 15 shots.

“Our passing worked out really well. We got out to the wings, we played diagonally, we did everything we practiced, basically,” Taylor explained.

Spaulding went up early with an unassisted goal in the second minute from Denver Heath.

That lead would only last until Eli Brookens scored Harwood’s first goal, coming in the 36th minute of the first half on an assist from captain Ethan Riddell.

This was the first win on the new pitch for any Harwood sports team, which is past the baseball field on the lower grounds.

Harwood will face Thetford at home on Saturday and will look to stay undefeated.
