On alpine skiing’s biggest weekend in Kitzbühel, Austria, 20-year-old Drew Duffy earned his first World Cup points with an amazing 27th-place finish in the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Alpine Super Combined event which took place January 22. The Super Combined is one super G run and one run of slalom, with both portions scheduled on the same day.
Duffy has trained for three seasons with the U.S. Ski Team and has experienced other World Cup starts, but his Kitzbühel debut was clearly a highlight. Of the event and his performance, he said, “It’s just awesome to be here. I don’t know if I was more scared for the super G or the slalom. There were definitely some nerves, but I’m excited with how I’m skiing.”
Duffy, the 2015 U.S. National Super G Champion and alumnus of Green Mountain Valley School (GMVS), has been racing on the NorAm and Europa Cup circuits and will race in Sochi, Russia, at the World Junior Championships in March. He grew up in Warren and trained at both Mad River Glen and Sugarbush Resort, to whom he gives much credit for his current success.
