Lee Delfausse, 70, Waitsfield, placed fifth in the Althea Gibson Cup at the ITF Super-Seniors World Team Championships. American teams won three of the eight titles at the 30th International Tennis Federation (ITF) Super-Seniors World Team Championships held from September 21 through 26 in Umag, Croatia. The tournament is the senior tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Fed Cup competitions with top American tennis players representing their countries in the 65-, 70-, 75- and 80-and-older age groups.
The U.S. won all three of their titles on the women’s side, capturing the Kitty Godfree Cup (65 and over), Queens Cup (75 and over) and Doris Hart Cup (80 and over). The Americans had two runner-up showings on the men’s side in the Britannia Cup (65 and over) and Bitsy Grant Cup (75 and over). This was the sixth consecutive year that the U.S. team triumphed in the Queens Cup group and the second year in a row the U.S. has captured the Kitty Godfree Cup.
Delfausse has played on multiple United States Tennis Association (USTA) tennis cup teams and has won national championships in singles and doubles on grass and clay surfaces. A former high school tennis coach, she currently runs a tennis program for approximately 200 kids and adults at the Hampton Tennis Barn in Hampton, New Hampshire.
When she is not representing the United States in foreign competitions, she is an active USTA League player in the Adult 18-plus women’s 4.5 division. The USTA League is the country's largest recreational tennis league helping players nationwide enjoy the thrill of competition while making friends, improving skills and staying active. The USTA League offers several league programs throughout the year that vary by gender, age and skill level divisions. Division formats also vary by offering singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
Following the ITF Young Seniors World Team Championships, the World Individual Championships were held from September 27 through October 4 in Umag.
