People might remember it as the Disastour, an event created in the fall of 2011 to assist needy folks affected by the ravages of Irene. But with memories of Irene fading gradually into the past, the race (still a community fundraiser) has for this year been re-christened the Disastour Blueberry Lake Triathlon. This three-ring circus of aerobic endurance, put on by Rochester Area Sports Trail Alliance (RASTA), will be held Saturday, October 18, on the eponymous lake and surrounding roads and trails, in part to celebrate the new, multi-use trail network.

The race will start with a 12.5-mile bike leg on dirt roads and singletrack, followed by a four-mile canoe or kayak paddle on the lake and a five-mile trail run. While there will certainly be competitors who will be in it to win it, this is primarily a low-key, have-a-good-time affair for any and all comers. Compete as a three-event ironman or ironwoman, put together a team, or participate in just one or two legs. Greater participation will mean more money for the local community organizations that are the race beneficiaries.

For race info and online registration, go to vtdisastourtriathlon.com. There will also be day-of-race registration at the start at Blueberry Lake from 9 to 10 a.m. preceding the 10 a.m. start. And when all the heavy breathing is over, the best part begins: a post-race awards ceremony and party featuring local food and locally brewed beverages. With The Alchemist, creator of world-famous Heady Topper, as a sponsor, it’s got to be good.
