A student from Waitsfield Elementary School took top honors in the 2007 Vermont Secretary of State's Poster Contest.

Emma McGeorge won first place in the kindergarten through grade two division of the Vermont Symbols Poster Contest, earning her a look at the original Vermont Constitution and a tour of the Vermont State House and Vermont Historical Society along with other winners.

Vermont Secretary of State Deb Markowitz served as tour guide for the May 17 trip.

Winners also participated in an awards ceremony in the State House cafeteria, where they received certificates and a $100 prize donated to each student's classroom to spend on civics education.

"It was very difficult to select winners from the many fine essays and creative posters we received," said Markowitz in a prepared statement. "This program is a great way to get youngsters thinking about their state and its history, while encouraging older students to examine the nature of self-governance and its importance in a free society."

Over 200 students participated in the contest by submitting posters or essays, according to the secretary of state's office.
