In February, Harwood Union Middle School held its annual Scripps Spelling Bee schoolwide competition. The contest is open to all students in grades seven and eight and was held in classrooms this year. After seven rounds of competition, the field shrank down to the final three: eighth-graders Piper Boudreau, Beckett Kahn and David Rivera-Ollenburger. Finals were held on Wednesday, March 6, and after many intense rounds with closely matched spellers, Beckett Kahn edged the competition and is the 2019 HUMS Scripps Spelling champion.
Beckett will go on to represent Harwood at the Vermont Scripps Spelling Bee at St. Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont, on March 19, 2019.
