Albert E. 'Gene' Eardensohn (major, U.S. Air Force retired)
Albert E. "Gene" Eardensohn, 90, of Charlotte, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 29, 2014, with his family at his side.
Gene Eardensohn was born in South Norwalk, CT, on May 31, 1924, the son of Albert Joseph and Katherine Ondis Eardensohn. He received his bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. While attending flight school in Georgia he met the love of his life, Liddell Littlefield. They were married in Albany, Georgia, on April 22, 1952.
The Army Air Corps soon after became the U.S. Air Force where he served as a pilot. Gene flew combat missions during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He served as a command pilot flying B-47 and B-52 aircraft. Rated as an instructor in 11 different aircraft, he flew in excess of 29,000 hours, before retiring in 1970 at Kincheloe Air Force Base. Gene has since been referred to fondly by friends and family as "Pilot Extraordinaire."
Gene is survived by his wife of 62 years, Liddell Eardensohn of Charlotte; his four children, Ondis Eardensohn and her companion Gregory Sanford, Paul and wife Tory Eardensohn, John and wife Patty Eardensohn and Richardson Eardensohn; seven grandchildren, Dosia, Emma, Alden, Sara, Lauren, Michael and Christopher. He was predeceased by a brother, Clifford John "Bud" Eardensohn.
A Mass of Christian Burial with Military Honors will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Charlotte with burial to follow at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery. Those who wish may make contributions in his memory to Wounded Warrior Project. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington.
