Richard "Rick" Thompson Klein, 64, passed away in the comfort of his family at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington on Friday, January 31, 2014. Born in Glen Ridge, NJ, on July 9, 1949, he was the son of the late Irving T. and Doris (Barron) Klein. On May 9, 1981, he married the former Lori Holman in Old Westbury, NY.
Rick was a graduate of Wayne Hills High School in Wayne, NJ, and continued his education at Canaan (NH) College where he received his bachelor of arts degree in history with a minor in philosophy. Following college, Rick found his way to the Mad River Valley where he worked on the ski patrol at Sugarbush Resort and began his life's vocation working in construction. Becoming proficient in all aspects of building, Rick worked in the Mad River Valley early in his career and it was there where he built his own home, literally from the ground up.
Rick went on to work as a project manager for Wright and Morrissey Construction and then for the state of Vermont as a clerk of the works, most notably overseeing the development and construction of the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph. He later worked for SD Ireland Construction and was currently employed by Omega Excavating Co. as an estimator and project manager. In his leisure time, he enjoyed skiing, particularly on Mt. Washington, sailing, canoeing, camping and, most of all, spending time with his family.
Rick is loved and mourned by his wife of 33 years, Lori Klein of Warren; his daughters, Alixandra Barron Klein of Truckee, CA, and Devin Thompson Klein and her fiancé Taylor Corrigan of Waitsfield; his sister, Mary-Ann Klein Becker and her husband Peter of Mount Pleasant, SC; his brother, James Barron Klein and his wife Bren of San Francisco, CA; two nephews, Erich Becker and Lance Becker; his father and mother-in-law, Gary and Joan Holman of Richmond; his brother-in law, Andrew Holman and his wife Leslie of Shelburne and their two children, Amanda and Zachary Holman.
A service celebrating the life of Richard Klein was held at the Round Barn Farm, 1661 East Warren Road in Waitsfield, on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at 4 p.m. followed by a reception.
