Stanley R. Livingston, 94, of Richmond, NH, and formerly of Keene, NH, Otis, CO, Springfield, MA, and Blandford, MA, died on Saturday, January 19, 2013. He passed peacefully in the comfort of his home under the care of hospice with his family at hand after a brief period of decline.
He was born the son of the late Mayme (Russ) and Robert Livingston on November 15, 1918, in Fayston, Vermont. He was educated locally and graduated from Waitsfield High School in Vermont, Class of 1937.
Stanley was a patriotic soul. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 14, 1940. He served his country during World War II and the Korean Conflict. During his time of service he was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medals with a Third Loop, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Service Stars, World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Korean Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He served in the New Guinea, Northern Solomon’s and Luzon Campaigns before separation on November 2, 1954. Between WWII and the Korean Conflict, Stanley spent many years on recruiting duty in Springfield, MA, and Goffstown, NH. Stanley was honorably discharged at the rank of staff sergeant.
Stanley worked for the federal government, Bureau of Land Management, in Colorado and Wyoming prior to his retirement in 1983. Before moving to Colorado he was the owner of the Blandford Drilling and Blasting Co. in Blandford, MA, following his chosen profession of drilling and blasting hard rock and beaver dams. He spent many years working construction projects, namely the Mass Pike, I-91, I-95 and the St. Lawrence Seaway in New York.
Stanley loved to play golf in his younger years. He could be found watching baseball and football games. He was an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan watching the games, relaxing and having a beer. Stanley also enjoyed being a boxer and spent many hours watching bouts and being in the ring. Stanley enjoyed the camaraderie of being a part of the Elks, Legion, Moose and Veterans of Foreign Wars where he held many elected positions over the years. Stanley loved his pets, especially his chickens and cat. Being a dad and grandfather was important to him. He always made sure he was available to his children and later the grandchildren.
Stanley is survived by his children and their spouses, Sandra Shepard of Manchester, CT, Karen Howe of Carthage, NY, Michael Livingston and his wife Janet of Pasadena, MD, and Kathy Livingston of Richmond, NH, seven grandchildren, Lance Shepard, Rylan Shepard, Kyle Howe, Vincent Livingston, Bradley Livingston, Sybil Greene and Emma Ogrodnik; and six great-grandchildren, Fiona, Sydney, Seth, Livia, Liberty and Aidan. Stanley is predeceased by his ex-wife, Alga Elizabeth James Livingston, and his siblings, Otto, Melvin, Sterling, Carlisle, Arnold, Gertrude Ralph, Shirley Fuller and Julius. A granddaughter, Belle Shepard, passed away in 2007.
In keeping with Stanley’s wishes there are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Oaklawn Cemetery in Springfield, VT.
