Elizabeth L. Bettis, 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 21, 2011, in Knoxville, TN. Born on March 31, 1919, in Hartland, Vermont, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Elsie (Lewin) Hough. She was a graduate of Waitsfield High School.
On June 22, 1940, she married Alden J. Bettis of Warren, VT. She worked for the Waitsfield Telephone Co. before her marriage and for some time after. Following her marriage she went to Key West, FL, to spend the winter with her husband where he spent two years in the U.S. Navy. They had three children, Deanna, Eugene and Anita. Eugene died of cystic fibrosis at the age of 22 months.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Henry Hough and Richard Hough, both of Waterbury. Her husband of over 63 years, Alden, passed away in 2004.
She is survived by her children, Deanna Dufresne and her husband Albert of Northfield Falls and Anita Chaisty of Knoxville, TN; three grandchildren, Richard Dufresne and his wife Cherlyn of Barre, Christopher Dufresne of Northfield, and Jeffrey Dufresne in Texas; five great-grandchildren, Ashley and Jeremy Dufresne of Barre, and Brette, Paige and Owen Dufresne of Northfield; her sister-in-law Cornie Hough of Waterbury; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
Elizabeth was a past member of the Waitsfield Rebekah Lodge for 65 years and a member of the Waitsfield American Legion auxiliary. She was also a member of the Waitsfield United Church of Christ for many years.
She has spent the last few winters with her daughter Anita in Knoxville, TN.

Graveside services were held from the Irasville Cemetery in Waitsfield on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at 11 a.m. A reception followed in the Waitsfield United Church of Christ dining room.
