Andrew E. Dzelzitis of Warren died on Friday, March 5, 2010, at the Dartmouth - Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.

He was born in Riga, Latvia, the son of the late Jekabs and Valentina (Smits) Dzelzitis. In 1949, the family emigrated to the United States where Andrew later graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and Brown University. He served in the U.S. Army as a teacher in its language program in Puerto Rico.

An artist, he taught painting and drawing at the Horace Mann School in Riverdale, NY, and at Hudson High School in Hudson, NY, retiring in 1990. Throughout his life his fine art was featured in many exhibits, one-man shows and a number of publications. He was a dedicated member of Patria, his Latvian fraternity.

Andrew leaves Betty Ann, his wife of 42 years, at their home in Warren among the mountains, woods and trout streams that he loved. He is survived by his stepdaughter, Jennifer Allen, her husband Tom Straw and grandchildren Christopher Soloway and Parker Soloway of Branford, CT; his stepson, Samuel Allen, his wife Diane and grandchildren Hunter Allen and Ashley Allen of Bayside, NY; his brother, Valentins J. Dzelzitis of Brookfield, MA; and a niece and her husband, Rosalind and John Dorelli of Rockville, MD.

As was his wish, he will be buried privately in Warren. Gifts in his memory would be appreciated to the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 305, Waitsfield, VT 05673. Assisting the family is the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury, VT.
