Burton Bauchner, on February 26, 2010, died peacefully after a brief
battle with pancreatic cancer, surrounded by his family at home in Palm
Beach, Florida.
He shared his last months lovingly remarried to his lifelong partner,
Susan (Kaplan) Bauchner. Burt was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and
moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he attended Sheridan School,
Maplewood Junior High and Bassick High School.
He graduated from Yale University in 1963, then served six years in the
U.S. Army Reserves. Burt worked for a bank, was a general construction
contractor, and the principal of an insurance agency. He was also an
active volunteer in the Bridgeport Jewish community, serving in
leadership roles at the Jewish Family Service, Jewish Federation,
Jewish Home for the Elderly and Congregation B'nai Israel.
Other interests included tennis, computers, sailing, cycling,
photography, skiing and, of course, reading. Burt retired at an early
age to pursue further education and travel. In the 1990s he lived in
New Haven, Connecticut, then New York City before settling in Warren,
Vermont, in 2000. He worked for the Sugarbush mountain ski school and
rental shop and became active in local politics.
He was elected to the Warren Select Board and served as its chair for
the past two years. He also coordinated the Valley Democrats and was a
delegate to the county and state Democratic committees. Although his
careers, interests and residences changed over the years, Burt's
commitment to his family was always foremost.
He is survived by his beloved wife Susan; their children, Adam and
Lisa; his siblings, Leonard, Arlene, Larry, Eugene and Susan; their
mother, Pauline; and several grandchildren, Njyhalo, Briana, Adrian,
Lilian and Amari. He also leaves behind scores of nieces, nephews,
cousins and lifelong friends.
Funeral services took place on Tuesday, March 2, 2 p.m., from The
Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road, Fairfield, CT
06824, www.greensfuneralhome.com, with interment following at B'nai
Israel Cemetery on Kings Highway in Fairfield.
Shiva observances followed the interment on Tuesday and 11 a.m. to 9
p.m. on Wednesday at the home of Bobby and Arnold Kaplan in Southport,
