Lester Raymond "Whitey" Miller Sr., 74, passed away in the comfort of his home and family on Tuesday, December 29, 2009. Born in Rochester on June 18, 1935, he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Manchester) Miller. On April 7, 1956, Lester married the former Marilyn Greenslit in Warren.

Lester attended schools in Rochester and Hancock and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served during the Korean War and was discharged in 1964 after 11 years of service. He worked briefly for the former Hubbard Oil Co. in Waitsfield before being offered employment with the Waitsfield Telephone Co. where he worked as a lineman, retiring in 1989 after 25 years of service. Not one to sit idle, Lester followed his joy of cooking and worked for over 10 years as a sous-chef at The Den in Waitsfield.

His memberships included the Lion's Club in Waitsfield where he was a charter member, the Mad River American Legion Post #75 of Waitsfield, was a member, assistant chief and chief of the Warren Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Warren United Church. In his leisure time he enjoyed cooking, hunting, fishing and camping.

Lester is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marilyn Miller of Warren; their children, Debbie Tremblay and her husband Tom of Waitsfield, Janet Brown and her husband Chuck of Granville, and Lester R. Miller Jr. and his wife Regina of Waitsfield; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Leland of Newport, NH, and Shirley Boutwell of East Braintree; two brothers, Bill Miller of Barre and Ken Miller of Rutland; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Lester was predeceased by two great-grandsons and 15 siblings.

Memorial services were held from the Warren United Church on January 5, 2010, at 11 a.m. with a reception following in the Warren Town Hall.
