Walter E. Broadwell, 85, of Fairground Road, Moretown, passed away at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Monday, April 6, 2009. Born in East Montpelier on April 8, 1923, he was the son of the late Frank and Phoebe (Derusha) Broadwell. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, the former Jeanette O. Constantine, whom he married in Waterbury on June 27, 1942, on September 16, 2003.

Walter was a 1941 graduate of Waitsfield High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the European African Middle Eastern and Asiatic Pacific Theaters of Operation during WWII. Upon his discharge, Walter went to work for the Eastern Magnesium Talc Co. in Moretown for 12 years and then was employed at the Vermont State Hospital in both the power house and plumbing shop.

He worked for several years for the former Empire Gas Co. in Berlin before embarking on a 34-year career working for Hall Construction, first as head of maintenance at the Green Mountain Nursing Home at Fort Ethan Allen in Colchester and then as maintenance supervisor for the Holiday Inn in Waterbury from which he retired. He later enjoyed picking up and delivering vehicles for several area car dealerships in central Vermont including most recently Capital City Auto Mart.

His memberships included St. Andrew Catholic Church, the Harry N. Cutting American Legion Post 59 where he served as past post commander, VFW Post 10034, the Knights of Columbus - Father Galligan Council, Winooski Lodge 49 - F&AM and the Twin City Bowling League. In his leisure time, Walter was an avid bowler, enjoyed horseshoes, snowmobiling, riding his motorcycle, fishing, hunting, camping, building things and gardening. A lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, Walter also enjoyed his time as a Little League coach.

Walter is survived by three children, Patricia Buckbee and her husband William of Moretown, Sandra Taylor and her companion Donald Morris of Waterbury, and Douglas Broadwell and his companion Susan Tarshis of North Montpelier; 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; his beloved dog, "Beauty"; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by a son, Robert Broadwell, two grandsons, Kirk and Eric Preston, three sisters and six brothers.

Funeral services will be held from St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury on Saturday, April 11, at 11 a.m. with interment to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
