Daniel W. Lee, 88, a longtime resident of Plainfield, passed away at
Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Wednesday, March 11, 2009. Born in
Bristol on July 31, 1920, Dan was the son of the late Elmer D. and Lena
(Farnham) Lee. On April 19, 1944, he married the former Hilda Boyce in
Moretown. Hilda passed away on November 24, 2006.
Dan grew up on Moretown Common where he helped on the family dairy farm
and following which, at the age of 17, he worked on the Little River
Flood Control Dam in Waterbury as a member of the CCCs. He later was
employed for a few years as a test pilot and mechanic for small
aircraft at the Burlington International Airport before going to work
as a mechanic, first for Cameron's Service Station in East Barre, then
the Farm and Industrial Co. in East Montpelier as shop foreman and
tractor mechanic, and most recently for Rowell Brothers Ford tractor
dealership in Hardwick from which he retired. He also worked for a year
for the State of Vermont, teaching farm equipment maintenance and
repair, in the greater St. Johnsbury area.
A lifelong hobby farmer, Dan also enjoyed playing the fiddle, was an
avid deer hunter and fisherman, as well as sugaring. He and his wife
Hilda enjoyed square dancing and were longtime members of the Central
Vermont Squares.
Dan is survived by his three children, Pamela Guptil and her husband
Stephen of Waterbury, and Philip Lee and Gifford Lee, both of
Plainfield; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a
brother, Edward Lee of Moretown; as well as nieces, nephews and
extended family. He was predeceased by two brothers, Andrew Lee and
Roland Lee.
Funeral services were held from the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in
Waterbury on Saturday, March 14. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts
