Mark R. Brown, 81, of Middlesex, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, February 26, 2009.
He was born on March 12, 1927, in Warren to the late Vaughn and Hazel
Brown. Mark attended local schools until he joined the Navy in 1944
during WWII, serving aboard the <MI>USS Sitka<D>.
In November 1946, he married Mary Green and they lived in Granville
where he was employed at the Bowl Mill. They later moved back to
Warren, living on Lincoln Mountain Road. Mark worked for Mad River Glen
until becoming general foreman at the Sugarbush ski area. He also
enjoyed logging on his own property with his team of horses Dan and
Don.
In 1964, he began work as a Washington County Deputy Sheriff. He was
appointed Washington County Sheriff by Governor Phillip Hoff in 1966.
In 1970, he and Mary moved to Middlesex. In 1976, he partnered with two
sons, Edward and Kerney, and purchased the Sugarbush Service Station in
Warren. After retirement he worked part time at Camp Mead. Mark was an
avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt.
Mark is survived by his loving wife, Mary; five children, Aaron and his
wife Joyce of Newport, Washington, Avon and her husband Jerry
Livingston of South Royalton, Edward and his wife Carol of Clarksville,
Virginia, Edwin and his wife Sheila of Waitsfield and Kerney of
Waitsfield; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one
great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Vivian Mold of North Adams, MA;
one brother, Sherwood of Lancaster, NH; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Stella Besette of Cabot and Glennis
Weston of Warren, as well as one grandchild, Beverly Locke of South
Royalton, and one great-grandchild, Matthew Locke of South Royalton.
