DATELINE: Waterbury
Richard J. "Dick" Hough, 87, of Lincoln Street, Waterbury, passed away
in the comfort of his home and family on Monday evening, January 19,
2009. Born in Hartland on April 23, 1921, he was the son of the late
George and Elsie (Lewin) Hough. On December 14, 1950, Richard married
the former Ruth Smith of Duxbury. Ruth passed away on April 3, 2006.
Richard grew up in Worcester and then served his country during WWII
with the U.S. Army. Following his honorable discharge, Richard came to
Waterbury and began a lifelong vocation as a master plumber with
Steele's Inc. In 1989 he ventured out on his own, continuing to provide
customers in central Vermont his outstanding skills and depth of
knowledge until his retirement at the age of 81.
A consummate family man, Richard also found great joy in hunting,
fishing and tinkering in his barn. His memberships included the Harry
N. Cutting American Legion Post 59 of Waterbury.
Richard is survived by his children, Carol Barber and her husband,
George, of Waterbury, Sandra Hough of Waterbury, Wendy Magee and her
husband, Aaron, of Duxbury, Harley Hough and his wife, JoAnn, of
Burlington, Gary Hough and his wife, Deborah, of Waterbury Center; 20
grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Bettis,
of Waitsfield; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
Richard was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Brunell; two
grandchildren, Talon and Aryana Magee; a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth
Brown; and a brother, Henry Hough.
Funeral services will be held from the Wesley United Methodist Church
in Waterbury on Saturday, January 24, at 11 a.m. with a reception to
follow in the church dining room. Burial will take place this spring in
the Waterbury Center Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be
omitted; rather memorial gifts would be appreciated to the American
