Mr. Whitworth known as "Spike" to his lifetime Warren friends (for having frozen at the site of a spike horn deer during one hunting season in Warren), was devoted to maintaining the Whitworth family barn, farmhouse and 100-acre farm right down to replacing what seemed like miles of perimeter fence posts and barbed wire fence. He took on this chore starting from his USAF retirement in 1971 and continuing on for over 30 years before passing it on to the next generation.
Spike spent 29 years as a bomber pilot with the U.S. Air Force. He enjoyed square dancing, playing guitar, maintaining his 100-acre family farm in Warren, carpentry, auto mechanics and most of all flying a variety of planes. He was a past Warren selectman and Code Enforcement Officer and a lifelong Grange member.
Lorne was predeceased by his parents, his devoted wife of 51 years Jane A., his son Brent and his dog "Paco," brothers John and Francis and sister Florence. He is survived by one daughter, Candi Devine and her husband Michael of Bangor, ME; three sons, Brian and his wife Nancy of Beaufort, SC, Barry and daughter-in-law Jackie of Burlington, VT, and Bruce and his wife Mary of Lutz, FL; four grandchildren, Cory and his wife Angel of Denham Springs, LA, Kyle of So. Portland, ME, Kelsey of Hampden, ME, and Maclean of Lutz, FL; two great-grandchildren, Lanie and Maddie of Denham Springs, LA; sister-in-law Dolores Cahill and her husband Frank of E. Greenwich, RI; very special friends Barbara Whitworth of Waitsfield, Wayne Kathan, Dottie and Ad Graves, and Gayle and Bill Ward; and many nieces and nephews. Lorne was also very appreciative of Richard and Kim Whitworth (his brother John's son and daughter-in-law) for their efforts in keeping the farm looking like an active enterprise with constant mowing, weed whacking and general maintenance and loving care.
A memorial and graveside service will be conducted July 4th weekend 2009. Those wishing to remember Lorne may make donations in his name to Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, P. O. Box 305, Waitsfield, VT 05673.
