He attended military school, served in the Hungarian Air Force and earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Budapest University of Technology. In 1956 he fled his native country under the threat of imprisonment by the Russian Occupation government for participating in the anti-communist uprising.
He immigrated to the United States via Austria, arriving in Schenectady in 1957. He worked in engineering capacities for American Locomotive Co. and MTI. He became a U.S. citizen in 1962. An avid tennis player, he invented a tennis grip that secures a player's hand to the racket, allowing people with disabilities to play tennis.
His first love was skiing and teaching the sport to others. Berzatzy taught skiing at Mad River Glen for 42 years and in 2006, at the age of 80, was recognized by <MI>Ski Magazine<D> as one of the top 100 ski instructors in North America. He had many friends in New York's Capital Region and in Vermont.
Paul was proud to consider the Mad River community his family. All fortunate enough to know and love Paul will miss him terribly. He touched so many over his long tenure at Mad River Glen. Let's keep him in our hearts and offer a toast to his memory. He is survived by his brother, Laszlo Berzatzy, who resides in Hungary. There will be no funeral.
