He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 17, 1913, the son of Rachel Lippman and Benjamin Hirschberg, second-generation Jews from Germany.
He is predeceased by his first wife, Bess Cohen (married 1937), who passed away in 1966. He remarried in 1969 to Eleanor Lenke of New York, who predeceased him in 1987.
In 1950, he took the advice of a friend and bought land, a barn and a house in Warren, Vermont, for $3,500, or roughly $3 an acre for over 100 acres of land on Lincoln Gap Road.
He is survived by a daughter, Joanna Clancy, and sons David, Mark, and Daniel, as well as stepdaughter Betsy Lenke, and stepsons Daniel Lenke and Harris Lenke Sussman.
Hank was an accomplished teacher, avid sailor, photographer and amateur chef. An immensely well-educated man, he was almost entirely self-taught, reading daily until the very end of his life. He was wise, witty and irreverent and a generous friend.
Cremation was by Forbis-Dick Funeral Home in Greensboro, and a memorial service was held for him on Sunday, June 15.
