Born in Spokane, Washington, on November 24, 1919, she was the widow of H. William Wilson, whom she married on January 31, 1942. Her passing was on the 66th anniversary of their wedding.
She was the beloved mother of James W. Wilson (Meredith) of Orchard Park, NY, Nancy Wilson of Fayston, Vermont, Ruth Havert of Port Orange, Florida, and Elizabeth Bassney (Peter) of Wasilla, Alaska. She was the grandmother of 16 grandchildren, including Susan Simpson of Warren, VT, Scott Idol of Bryn Mawr, PA, Katie Idol of Warren, VT, Matthew Idol of Moretown, VT, and 19 great-grandchildren.
Doris was affectionately known as "Door Bell" to her brothers and sisters and "Mima" by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Doris was elected and served as Town Clerk of the Town of Erwin in Steuben County, New York, for 20 years. She will be remembered for her commitment to her community through her tireless volunteerism. She was active in the First Congregational Church of Corning and served as a Deacon and Trustee. Her community service in the Corning area includes the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army, Quota Club, Republican Women, Girl Scouts, and Meals on Wheels. She was the first treasurer of the girls' Cinderella Baseball League. Doris served as president of Corning Hospital Chapters' Council and was a board member of the Southern Tier Heart Association where she chaired its fund drive for the Town of Erwin for 10 years. In 1981 she was selected as Painted Post's Citizen of the Year.
Doris visited family in Vermont since 1976 and moved to Warren in 1999. While she lived in Warren she regularly attended the Warren United Church of Christ and participated in senior activities at Evergreen Place.
"Mima" will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her generosity, her chocolate chip cookies and her determination to win every card game. Besides volunteering, she was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and being with her family. She now rests with her greater family.
A memorial service will be held during the Memorial Day weekend in Corning, New York. Contributions can be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Doris and Bill Wilson.
