Born in Moretown on August 16, 1911, daughter of the late Estes J. and Sarah Winifred (Dalton) Hatch, she was raised in Salem, MA, and graduated from Salem High School. As a young woman she worked at Sylvania Hygrade, Salem, and later at the Pequot Mills in Salem. Her hobbies included doll-making, sewing, and knitting.
