Fletcher Baird Joslin, longtime Waitsfield resident, passed away peacefully at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin, VT, on Tuesday, February 13, 2007. He was born February 5, 1912, the son of Stephen Perry Joslin and Lena (Baird) Joslin, and graduated from Waitsfield High School in 1930, the University of Vermont in 1934, and Boston University Law School in 1938.
He married Ruth Theriault on September 21, 1940, the daughter of William N. and Alice Callahan Theriault, all of Montpelier.
He was admitted to the Vermont Bar in January 1939 and practiced law in Montpelier, VT, for almost 54 years until his retirement in December 1992. He was a member of the American Bar Association, Vermont Bar Association and Washington County Bar Association. Other memberships during active practice: American Judicature Society, Association of Insurance Attorneys, American Counsel Association, Defense Research Institute.
He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives in 1941, and Assistant Clerk and Clerk of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1943 to 1953. He held several Waitsfield town offices including town attorney, moderator of Town Meeting, trustee of cemetery funds, and was trustee of the Joslin Memorial Library for 45 years (since 1957). He was also a member of the Waitsfield Zoning Board of Adjustment. While serving as Waitsfield town attorney he drafted the first Zoning Ordinance of the Town of Waitsfield, which was adopted at March meeting in 1971.
He served as chairman of the Waitsfield Sesquicentennial Committee in 1939 and as co-chairman of the Waitsfield Bicentennial Committee in 1989. He was a member of the Waitsfield United Church of Christ (formerly the Waitsfield Federated Church) since 1929. He was a member of the Waitsfield Historical Society since its formation in 1970 and a member and past president of the Montpelier Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his two sons, Peter B. Joslin and his wife Jolyn and Fletcher Brian (Ted) Joslin and his wife Jean, all of Waitsfield; by four grandchildren, Peter Baird Joslin Jr. and his wife Lisa of Albany, NY, Jennifer Joslin Cincotta and her husband Anthony of Tiverton, Rhode Island, Brian Joslin and his fiancée Tracy Straub, and Scott Joslin, all of Waitsfield; and great-grandchildren, Hanah, Emma and Luca Cincotta of Tiverton, RI, and Carina and Jacob Baird Joslin of Albany, NY. He is also survived by his nephews, Stephen Joslin of Williamstown, VT, and David Joslin of Colchester, CT, and their respective families.
He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Theriault Joslin, who passed away on December 5, 2006, a brother, Riford S. Joslin, and his sister, Elizabeth Joslin.
He was very proud of the fact that he was a direct descendant of Thomas Joslin, who sailed from London, England, to Hingham, MA, in 1635, and the fact that his four grandchildren, Baird, Jennifer, Brian and Scott, are eighth generation Joslins who were raised in Waitsfield.
A special thanks is extended to the staff at the Lincoln House where he resided for the last year and a half, and the staff at Woodridge Nursing Home for their care and kindness.
Memorial services will be held from the Waitsfield United Church of Christ on Saturday, February 17, at 2 p.m. Friends may call at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Spring inurnment for Fletcher and his wife, Ruth, will take place in the Waitsfield Common Cemetery.
