Della L. Clifton, 88, of Waterbury, died January 25, 2007, in the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin.  
           
Della was born in Duxbury on February 2, 1918, the daughter of the late Burt and Elva (Shonio) Chase.  She attended schools in the Waterbury-Duxbury area.  She began work at a very early age and worked in various capacities, retiring from the Vermont State Hospital in 1980 with 20 years of service as a psychiatric technician.

She was first married to Charles Gage.  On July 2, 1955, she married Ernest Clifton Jr. who died September 26, 2002.

She enjoyed cooking, playing cards and visiting with friends and family.

She leaves her daughter, Lorraine (Gage) Gilman of Waterbury; two grandsons, Mark Gilman of So. Burlington and his fiancée, Kim Cutrone of Colchester, Kevin Gilman and his wife Donna of Waterbury; and two great-grandsons, Justin Gilman of Waterbury and Anthony Gilman of Homestead, FL; her sister, Ida Olmstead of Stockbridge; sisters-in-law Virginia Martin of Concord, NH, Mary Chase of Westfield, MA, and Clara Chase of Ferrisburg; in addition she leaves several nieces and nephews. Her sisters, Martha and Theresa, and brothers, George, Harold and Dennis, predeceased her.

The family would like to convey their deep appreciation to the Central Vermont Home Health staff and the staff at Woodridge Nursing Home.  We feel very fortunate for the excellent care she was given by everyone.  Also, the family is very grateful to the Harvey and Welch families, who were like family, for the many kindnesses shown to her.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 3, from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury.  The family wishes to invite everyone to the dining room following the service for fellowship and refreshments.
