Oliver M. Maxwell, 87, of Braintree, died early Tuesday morning, July 11, 2006, at Mayo Health Care in Northfield, VT.
He was born June 30, 1919, in Waitsfield, VT; the son of M. Lloyd and Blanche (Long) Maxwell. He was raised in Waitsfield, and served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II, and was recipient of a Purple Heart. After the war, he lived in Granville and worked for Vermont Plywood Company in Hancock. He was married to Helene Luce on February 15, 1947, in Granville and moved to the Braintree area in 1954.
Oliver had been a maintenance foreman for the State of Vermont Highway Department for 32 years, retiring in 1978. After retirement, he worked part time for the Town of Randolph Highway Department. He was past master and chaplain of the Moss Glen Grange, and a member of the White River Post and the Hancock Howard Perry Post #759 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife Helene of Braintree; brothers, Milford Maxwell and Elliott Maxwell both of White River Junction, VT; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Gilbert Maxwell.
Graveside Services with military honors will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Rochester, with Rev. Robert Hamm, officiating. There are no calling hours. Contributions in his memory may be made to VNA Hospice, 46 S. Main St #1, White River Jct, VT 05001, or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1460, Williston, VT 05495. Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
