Carl Shulman of Taos, New Mexico, died September 26, 2023, after a three-year battle with leukemia. Born in Pittsfield, Illinois, to Dr. Myer (Mike) Shulman and Violet Bozwell Shulman, he graduated from Pittsfield High School (1965) where he played football and trombone. While still in Pittsfield, he earned his private pilot license, even flying to Chicago's Midway airport. He was an accomplished sportsman who loved the outdoors -- skiing, sailing, and road, mountain and downhill biking, hiking, golf, and playing rugby. He was a voracious reader of history, and he daily completed the New York Times crossword. In 1969 he received his B.A. in history from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Penn football team, and of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, where he majored in bridge.
After briefly teaching school, he spent 20 years in Waitsfield, Vermont, teaching skiing at Mad River Glen and Sugarbush, and in Portillo, Chile. In 1991 he moved to Taos -- the world's best place to be a professional ski instructor. Carl's 50-year ski career, including stints as a ski school supervisor and as a Skiing Magazine boot tester, earned him the affection and respect of hundreds of colleagues, clients, and staff.
He was generous with his time and expertise, and loved leading challenging adventures through Taos' wild terrain only to see faces light up with achievement . . . and ask to do it again. He leaves behind his wife, Barbara Shulman, his sisters Marion Keenan and Jean Uhe, and his brother, David Shulman (Martha Rothstein) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and so many, many friends. Carl believed classical music could calm a twitchy electorate, so please make memorial contributions to 95.5 KHFM Classical Public Radio in Albuquerque.
