Peter Gardiner, 69, long-term resident of Duxbury, Vermont, unexpectedly passed away from complications due to diabetes on January 18, 2021, in his home. Peter was an avid skier his whole life, beginning at Sugarbush in the late 1950s up to the present. He had planned to go skiing the day he died. He learned the old-style Austrian technique at the Peter Estin Ski School at Sugarbush and later combined with the more contemporary American style. He skied with the best at Sugarbush.
Peter also had a deep love of playing guitar and was amazingly skilled and soulful in his playing. He sought out live music wherever he could find it, both in Vermont and Gloucester, Massachusetts. He played in bands in the Boston area in his younger years. Born in Beverly, Massachusetts, he attended the Groton School, St John’s College, Tufts and Boston University. He taught American history at a private secondary school in Connecticut before moving to the Mad River Valley in the early 1980s. He worked in a variety of businesses in The Valley over the years. Peter was a warm-hearted and passionate soul who won the hearts of many. He will be sorely missed.
Due to COVID restrictions there will not be a public memorial for him at this time, but there is an idea for a party being hatched to celebrate his life as soon as COVID disappears.
He leaves behind two sisters, Frankie Gardiner, Waitsfield, and Diana Bui, as well as four nephews, one niece, nine grand nieces and nephews, and extended family in Massachusetts, Maine and beyond.
