Lucille Jacqueline Lantelme Hampton passed away peacefully on February 20, 2020. She was 94. Born in Woodhaven, NY, she had a colorful career in radio and early television and told wonderful stories about Cary Grant, Bing Crosby, Marilyn Monroe and the bandleader Kay Kyser, among others. She went on to be a human resources professional in Connecticut, where she raised her daughters. Fiercely independent, in her 20s she solo traveled to Europe on an ocean liner.
Lucille was a diehard crossword puzzler (in ink, of course), reader, art lover and lifelong learner. At just shy of 5 feet, she often made her own clothes. She taught her daughters about food and entertaining, which fork to use, to appreciate museums and historical sites, and to give back to one’s community. Incapable of passing a puppy without a cuddle, she gave generously to animal welfare organizations and local food pantries. Lucille relocated to Vermont in 1998, living in Waitsfield and South Burlington, where she was well-known for her stylish hats.
Preceded in death by her parents, Elsie Marguerite and James John, and brother James Harold. Survived by her daughters, Caroline Manning (Jim) of Dallas, Texas, and Danielle Hampton of Waitsfield. And the various dogs, cats and horses she considered her grandchildren.
Lucille’s life will be celebrated at 3 p.m., Thursday, March 12, at Waitsfield United Church of Christ.
In lieu of flowers, she asked that donations be made to the Mad River Valley Food Shelf, Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports or any animal welfare organization. https://madrivervalleyfoodshelf.wordpress.com, www.vermontadaptive.org/
