Sharlia Palmer obituarySharlia B. Palmer, 81, a longtime resident of Waitsfield, passed away at her home in Waitsfield, November 14, 2019, surrounded by her loving family and dog.

Born April 28, 1938, in Burlington, Vermont, the daughter of Elwin and Geneva Bohannon of Waterbury, Vermont.  Sharlia was schooled and graduated from high school in Waterbury.  She later began her career at the Vermont State Hospital where she worked in nursing.

On October 25, 1958, she married Delbert W. Palmer.  They settled in Waitsfield where they had their three daughters.  Later they welcomed their grandchildren into the world, who lived within a short distance of their home.

Sharlia worked as a physical education teacher and girls’ basketball coach at Harwood Union High School and then later became the town clerk for Waitsfield.  In 1995, Delbert and Sharlia took over the six-generation family maple sugar business, Palmer Maple Products, that won numerous awards and was known all over the world during its duration.

She served on the Mad River Valley Ambulance as an EMT for 10 years and was a dispatcher for the Waitsfield-Fayston Fire Department for many years.  She was a member of the Waitsfield United Church of Christ and the Eastern Star Chapter 7.

Sharlia was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who enjoyed helping to raise her grandchildren by enriching their lives. Not a day would go by where she didn't think of or see her grandchildren.

She was grateful for the loving care she received from her family and friends and the love and caring support from her best friend JoAnn.

She is survived by her daughter Shawn Young and husband Mark Young; daughter Susan Burbank; grandchildren: Shannon Young and beloved Jonah Pratt, Ryan Young and beloved Kelsey Lemieux, Jared Young and spouse Abigail Borthwick, Sabrina Burbank and fiancee Adam Daley, Natasha Burbank and beloved Sean Russell; sister Virginia Barton and husband Bernard Barton; and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, Delbert Palmer; her daughter Shelah Palmer and parents, Elwin and Geneva Bohannon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641.
