Gloria May Phoebe Mayo, 75, passed away peacefully in the arms of her daughter, Janet Bond, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Sunday, October 6, 2019. Born on May 9, 1944, she was a daughter of the late Gordon H. and Bernice S. (Downing) White. Gloria was previously married to Curtis A. Mayo.
Gloria was a 1962 graduate of Waterbury High School and continued her education at the Sheldon Academy of Beauty Culture in Burlington. She began her employment at the Vermont State Hospital (VHS) in Waterbury where she enrolled in the Vera Hanks School of Psychiatric Nursing. Completing her certification, Gloria was employed at VSH for 23 years. Retiring in 1990 due to her declining health, Gloria found great joy as a homemaker and a stay-at-home mom to the pride and joy of her life, her daughter Janet.
In her leisure time she enjoyed playing cribbage, cards, doing crossword puzzles, Yahtzee, Scrabble, jigsaw puzzles, going on trips and fall chicken pie suppers.
Gloria is survived by her daughter, Janet Bond and her husband Arthur; her friend and former husband, Curtis Mayo; her siblings, Richard White and his wife Anne, Berton White and his wife Patty, David White and his wife Jane, Mary White, Margaret Corriveau, and Theresa King and her husband James; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Gloria was predeceased by a sister, Ermona Austin.
Gloria gifted her body for research and education to the University of Vermont College of Medicine. A memorial service celebrating the life of Gloria Mayo will be held from Trinity United Methodist Church, 137 Main Street, Montpelier, on Sunday, October 20, at 2 p.m. Assisting the family is Perkins-Parker Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waterbury.
