Margery Anne (Pelsue) Gregory, 80, of Brandon, Vermont, went to be with Lord on May 18, 2017. Marge had been in assisted living in Burlington for the previous six months and had a constant stream of visitors from her family and friends. Marge is survived by her two children, Janet G. Kenney of West Bolton, VT, and Robert S. Gregory of Wilmington, MA, Janet’s husband, Frederick Kenney, and Marge’s three grandchildren, Cambria, Aliza and Benjamin, as well as her sister, Janet Smith. Marge’s beloved husband, Spencer, preceded her in death in 2015.
Marge was the third child of four born to Ivor Seneca Pelsue and Eleanor Thomas Pelsue of Bennington, VT. Although she was born in Ravenna, OH, Marge grew up in Vermont. Marge attended the University of Vermont studying home economics, where she met her two great loves. First, she came to faith in Jesus Christ, experiencing a truly transformed life. Second, she met Spence Gregory, whom she married in June 21, 1958, beginning a love affair and marriage that lasted 56 years. Marge left UVM to attend St. Joseph’s secretarial school and worked as a secretary to support them while Spence finished his degree.
Marge and Spence moved frequently in their early marriage, living in Barre, VT, Rockland, ME, Arlington, MA, Avon, MA, and eventually Abington, MA, where they settled and raised their children for 15 years. They welcomed their first child, daughter Janet Ellen, in 1960. Their son, Robert Spencer, was born in 1962.
Marge was a caring and devoted wife and mother, bringing creativity, joy, stability and a love of God to everything she did and instilling the same in her children. She taught Sunday school, took classes in a multitude of crafts, hosted Bible studies and without aspiring to, came to be a friend and support to many women and kids in her community.
In 1982, Spence and Marge purchased and operated The Village House, a home accessories shop in Waitsfield, VT. Marge’s business acumen and organizational skills were a critical part of how successful The Village House was under their ownership. The couple enjoyed 18 years of this adventure, forming friendships, participating in town events and helping to start the Bible Fellowship Church of Waitsfield.
In 2000, Marge and Spence sold The Village House and retired to Sudbury, VT, participating in the Brandon Baptist Church, enjoying their grandchildren and participating in, The 251 Club, traveling to and photographing as many of Vermont’s 251 towns as was possible.
Since Spence’s passing in 2015, Marge experienced a series of ailments that weakened her, eventually requiring her to move to assisted living. Despite this, Marge continued to play a role in the lives of her friends, loving, listening and encouraging them and above all praying for them that God would meet their needs, right up until the night of her death. She lived in the continual hope of joining Spence before the throne of God and that hope continues to inspire those who knew her well.
A celebration of Marge’s life and of the grace of God was held at the Brandon Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Memorial Day, May 29, 2017.
