Lynn G. Lewis Jr., 88, a lifelong resident of Duxbury, passed away in the comfort of his family at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Saturday evening, May 20, 2017. Born in Randolph on September 16, 1928, he was the son of the late Lynn G. Lewis Sr. and Blanche (Cook) Lewis. On November 21, 1953, he married the former Lucille Hudon in Waterbury.
Lynn grew up and attended schools in North Duxbury and was a 1947 graduate of Waterbury High School where he was a star baseball pitcher. From 1947 until 1950, Lynn worked as a boiler operator for Green Mountain Power (GMP). As a member of the Vermont Army National Guard from 1947 to 1950, Lynn’s Guard unit was federalized on September 5, 1950, to serve during the Korean War. On May 16, 1952, he was honorably discharged at the rank of corporal. Lynn returned to Duxbury and resumed work for GMP and was employed for over 45 years as a lineman. He and Lucille moved to their current Duxbury residence in 1955 where they raised their large and loving family.
Lynn carried his love for baseball into coaching youth throughout the years and even continued after his retirement from coaching to guide many boys on improving their pitching skills. A passionate history buff, particularly the Civil War, Lynn loved to sit and discuss strategies and various battles that were fascinating to him.
Lynn was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Harry N. Cutting American Legion Post 59 and Winooski Lodge #49, F&AM, all of Waterbury.
In his leisure time he enjoyed maple sugaring on Camel’s Hump, loved spending time at his camp on Scrabble Hill in Duxbury and was an avid hunter that included deer hunting and rabbit hunting with his beagles. An avid Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings fan, he also loved to cut his own firewood, country music, practicing his electric guitar and singing, whether it was in church, doing dishes or while doing chores.
Lynn is loved and mourned by his wife of 64 years, Lucille Lewis of Duxbury; their children, Lucinda Clark and her husband Randy of Belvidere, Bonnie Kerin and her husband Ron of Waterbury Center, Merry Baker and her husband Jeff of Jericho, Joan Haskins and her husband Jeffrey of Duxbury, and Sue O’Brien and her husband Chris of Waterbury Center; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; his brother, Paul Lewis and his wife Martha of Waterbury; his nephew, Bruce Lewis of Waterbury; his mother-in-law, Ruth Hudon of Waterbury; as well as extended family. Lynn was predeceased by three children, Scott Lewis, Holly Lewis and Captain Gordon Lewis.
