Douglas George Andrews, 72, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on Wednesday morning, March 22, 2017. Born in Waitsfield on November 18, 1944, he was the son of the late Fred and Ruth (Backus) Andrews. On March 20, 1964, he married the former Joanne C. Davison in Moretown.
Doug attended school in Waitsfield and then went on to have a long career as a heavy equipment operator. He began his vocation with Pizzagalli Construction Co. where he was employed for 26 years. Following, he worked for S.G. Phillips Construction Inc. in Waitsfield and Eugene Grandfield Excavation in Moretown before founding his own company, Doug’s Excavating of South Duxbury, as well as a firewood business, both of which he operated for over 30 years.
Doug loved spending time and entertaining his many friends and family at his “down over the bank” camp, a four-season getaway on his property in South Duxbury. In addition he enjoyed deer hunting, feeding the rainbow and brook trout in his stocked pond by his camp, and following stock car racing, particularly his brother, Norman Andrews, at Thunder Road.
Doug is loved and mourned by his wife of 53 years, Joanne Andrews of South Duxbury; their son, Kurt Andrews and his wife Kym of Duxbury; four grandchildren, Jenna Burke of Boston, Alexa Burke of Colchester, Mariah Burke of Essex, and Taber Andrews of Duxbury; six sisters, Lois Andrews of Waterbury, Waneta Bushey and her husband Bill of Greenwood, SC, Ellie Ferris and her husband Howard of Moretown, Barbara Straw and her husband Dennis of Keeseville, NY, Nelda Hallstrom and her husband Louis of Northfield, and Linda Nelson of Wolcott; a brother, Norman Andrews and his companion Maria Folsom of Northfield; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Doug was predeceased by a daughter, Cheryle Andrews Burke, on October 24, 2006.
