Myron J. Libby, 77, passed away in the comfort of his home and family on Wednesday evening, November 23, 2016. Born in Barton on April 12, 1939, he was the son of the late Calvin and Evelyn (Gay) Libby. On October 29, 1960, he married the former Brenda J. Gibbs in Waterbury. Brenda passed away on December 20, 1997. Myron married the former Elizabeth “Betty” (Griffith) Johnson on July 22, 2000, in Waterbury Center.
Myron graduated in 1958 from Stowe High School and began dairy farming, first with his father-in-law Keith Gibbs in Waterbury Center and then later purchasing a dairy farm from Hymie Myers, which he operated for several years. Following, Myron began a long and successful career as a builder working for Edward Miller before venturing out on his own in a partnership with Ed Gilbert, founding Libby and Gilbert Construction. Well known in the central Vermont area as an exceptional carpenter and tradesman, Myron built and remodeled many homes prior to contracting to construct, over multiple decades, Stonybrook Condominiums in Stowe from which he retired. Not one to be idle, Myron worked summers for over 10 years as an assistant greenskeeper with his boss and friend, Andy Wass, at Blush Hill Country Club in Waterbury and continued his hand farming, occasionally helping out at Woodruff Farm in Waterbury, both of which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Myron was a longtime member of Blush Hill Country Club and Montpelier Elks Club and in his leisure time enjoyed raising chickens, gardening, golfing, snowshoeing and hunting and took great pride in maintaining his property.
Myron is survived by his wife, Betty Libby of Waterbury Center; his daughter, Lisa Cummings and her husband Jim of Underhill; his grandchildren, Jesica Woodard and her husband Bryce of Moretown, Connor Cummings of Bend, OR, Keegan Cummings and Riley Cummings, both of Underhill; his great-granddaughter, Makena Woodard; longtime family friends, Lynn Wilkinson and her husband Dana Griswold of Duxbury; his stepdaughters, LeeAnne Viens and her husband Chris of Waterbury Center, Sandy Sabin and her partner Dennis Griffin of Claremont, NH, and Lorrie Johnson of CA; his siblings, Georgia Rexford and her husband Howard of Waterbury, Mary Kellett and her husband Steve of Milan, NH, Susan Vance and her husband Richard of Groton, Patricia Shonio and her husband Harold of Sebring, FL, and Donald Libby of Barton; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Myron was predeceased by two children, Robin Libby and Jeffrey Libby; two sisters, Mildred Henderson and Bettylou Gibson; and a brother, Calvin Libby.
Memorial services will be held from Waterbury Congregational Church on Friday, December 2, 2016, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow at the Waterbury American Legion. Private inurnment will take place in Maple Street Cemetery, Waterbury Center.
