James Stackpole Herman died peacefully on August 30, 2016, in Connecticut.
He was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on August 17, 1927, to John Crull Herman and Margaret Stackpole Herman of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
He attended Phillips Academy (1945) and graduated from Yale University in 1950. He served in the Air Force for a year prior to graduation from Yale. He married Brita Marie Lehmkuhl of Oslo, Norway, and Greenwich, Connecticut, on June 6, 1959.
After working at Fairchild Engines, he moved to Warren, Vermont, where he was active in the community, serving as a member of the select board. He developed and ran the Sugarbush Inn and Resort and the Sugarbush Golf Course.
An avid, lifelong sailor and pilot, Jim competed in a number of Bermuda races and helped develop the Warren-Sugarbush Airport. He worked to promote The Valley as a soaring hub. He captained the 1974 U.S. Soaring Team in their international competition in Australia.
Jim and Brita lived with their family in Warren, France, the Bahamas and settled finally in Old Lyme, Connecticut. He is survived by his wife, Brita; their three children, Kerry, Jigger and Mikkel; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial gathering will be scheduled soon. Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Old Lyme, Connecticut, is handling the arrangements.
