Ave Marie Haviland, of Fayston, Vermont, and formerly Mamaroneck, New York, died peacefully at UVM Medical Center surrounded by her sons on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, after a short illness. She was 82. Ave was the daughter of Magnus Klingenberg and Evelyn (Walsh) Klingenberg of Bronx, New York.
Ave graduated from Hunter College, New York, with degrees in English and geology. She attained her master’s in education from Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York, and taught in early education and elementary school settings for over 30 years.
After retiring with her husband, Walt, in 1992, they relocated to Fayston where she became involved in many activities including skiing nearly every day at Mad River Glen, right through the 2016 ski season, cycling with the Silver Streakers Bike Club in summers and membership in the Green Mountain Club and Mad Birders club. She gave her time volunteering for the Fayston School ELF program, the Fayston Historical Society and the Joslin Memorial Library, which she loved most of all. Ave was a rockhound who could identify minerals and fossils on sight as well as tree and wildflower species, but most of all she loved her birds and was very disappointed when she had to take down her feeders because of the local bear population.
Ave was an active and lifetime member of the White Plains Ski Club which maintains a lodge near the base of the Mad River Glen ski area.
Throughout her life, Ave was a conscientious person who was devoted to her husband and sons. She loved skiing with her sons and grandchildren and taught them to have a conscience by her own example. She was an early “recycler” even as far back as the early 1970s when it was not a common practice and subscribed to the Conservationist magazine while living in New York. Later in life she was always thrilled to spend time with her grandchildren and was very close to them.
Ave was predeceased by her husband, Walter Haviland, and is survived by her sons, Chris Haviland and his children, Samantha and Nate, of Hinesburg; and Mark Haviland and his son, Louis Haviland, of Fayston.
A memorial Mass is planned for 1 p.m. on August 20, 2016, at Our Lady of the Snows church in Waitsfield.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ave’s name can be made to the Joslin Memorial Library, Waitsfield.
