Amanda L. “Mandy” Morse, 47, an educator, mother, firefighter and inspiration to many, passed away at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington on Monday evening, September 7, 2015, following a longtime battle with liver disease and, more recently, the effects of a stroke. Born in Bennington on September 1, 1968, she was the daughter of Julie (Kelly) Librett and the late Bernard Librett. On August 1, 2015, Mandy married Stanley W. Morse in Stowe. She was previously married to Ray Drake.
Mandy was a graduate of Darien (CT) High School and continued her education at Johnson State College where she earned her degree in education. She began her vocation as an educator at Stowe High School where she remained for several years. She later took a position at Duxbury Elementary School teaching grades three and four. When Waterbury and Duxbury formed their own school district and opened Crossett Brook Middle School in Duxbury, Mandy joined the teaching staff and enjoyed teaching grades five and six.
Never one to be idle, Mandy in addition to her teaching career, worked as a waitress for a number of restaurants in the Stowe area that included Harrison’s, the Partridge Inn, Depot Street Malt Shop and Gracie’s. She was also a ski instructor at Stowe Mountain Resort for several years, taught spinning classes at the Swimming Hole in Stowe and trained and competed in tri-athlete events that included the Tough Mudder Endurance Competitions. Her memberships included the Waterbury Volunteer Fire Department and Waterbury Congregational Church. A special thank you to the Waterbury Fire Department for their love and support, in so many ways, and dedication to helping find a donor for Mandy.
Mandy is lovingly remembered for her positive attitude, her gifts as a friend and mentor, her desire to stay connected to her students both past and present, for her fortitude to face all challenges and for her adventurous desire to travel the world and bring her children along to explore with her.
Mandy is loved and mourned by her husband and best friend, Stanley Morse of Waterbury; her mother, Julie Librett of Savannah, Georgia; her children, Samantha Drake of Waterbury Center and John Drake of Duxbury; her stepchildren, Joanna Morse of Jericho and Anthony Morse and his fiancée Angie Quintin of Vergennes; two brothers, John Librett and his wife Allison of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Jeremy Librett and his wife Camille Story of Salt Lake City, Utah; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
A service to remember and celebrate the life of Mandy Morse will be held from the Crossett Brook Middle School gymnasium on Monday evening, September 14, 2015, at 6 p.m. with a reception to follow in the school cafeteria. The family requests that flowers be omitted; rather memorial gifts would be appreciated to the High Fives Foundation (www.highfivesfoundation.org). Assisting the family is Perkins-Parker Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waterbury. To send online condolences visit www.perkinsparker.com and the funeral home Facebook page.
