Green Mountain Access is completing an upgrade of its email service to Google Apps today, November 1. The process got under way on October 30 and the Green Mountain Access techs have provided the answers to some common questions regarding the upgrade.
Where can I find additional information?
The best place to start is by visiting http://www.gmavt.net/google. You will find information to guide you through the conversion as well as frequently asked questions and answers.
Is GMA still going to be a local company?
Please be assured, this does not change the local family ownership of our company in anyway. We rely on a wide variety of best in class manufacturers and vendors to provide the hardware and software we use to deliver the products and services you require.
Will I have to change my email address?
Your email address will not change as a result of this conversion. Google considers your full email address to be your username. Enter your full email address unless directed otherwise. An example would be
I use an email program here to send and receive my email, can I still use it after the conversion?
Yes, if you currently use email software on your computer to check your email (such as Outlook or Thunderbird) you can continue to send and receive your email using your mail client just as you do today.
When is the conversion going to take place?
The conversion began the evening of October 30. Once we begin the migration, the new servers will begin to send and receive new email. Any existing email and folders stored on our servers will then be transferred over. The transfer of old email will take some time so it may take up to 48 hours for all old mail to reappear in your new email box.
What benefits will I receive from the conversion to a new email platform?
The Google Apps suite of services will not only provide Green Mountain Access email and webmail, but will also give you access to Google Apps including email, calendar, instant messaging (IM/Chat), drive/docs, personal website services and much, much more! You can use just the email or take advantage of any of the other features that will be available to you. This migration will bring with it improved capacity, security, collaboration and flexibility.
Will I have to pay extra for this?
No, these services are included with your Green Mountain Access Internet connection at no additional cost to you.
Are you going to send information back to Google?
While you may be familiar with Google’s free email service (Gmail) this is different. Green Mountain Access is bringing you the premium version of Google Apps designed specifically for Internet Service Providers. There is no advertising and all contextual message screening and filtering is turned off. Messages are only screened for SPAM and Viruses just as they are by our current filter Red Condor.
Can I opt out of this conversion and keep things the same as they are now?
If you use Green Mountain Access email, your account will be converted. If you no longer want to use our email services, you can continue to use your Internet service without using our email or additional features. You can also setup email software on your computer to check your email (such as Outlook or Thunderbird).
Will I be notified before my account is converted?
We will continue to notify and update our customers with information throughout the conversion process. The conversion began the evening of October 30.
Will I lose my emails/address book/webmail calendar?
All email will be backed up and migrated to the new email system. In addition, we will import your address books from our existing webmail systems. If you use a POP email client, your mail and address books are stored locally on your computer and will remain there. If you use a Webmail Calendar (in Laszlo or Squirrel Mail) it will not be converted. Once we begin the migration, the new servers will begin to send and receive new email. Any existing email and folders stored on our servers will then be transferred over. If you chose to move your personal address book from your own email client, you can import that as well. The transfer of old email will take some time, so it may take up to 48 hours for all old mail to reappear in your new email box.
Will my address book and contacts get migrated?
Address books/contacts that exist in your webmail account will be migrated to Google Mail following the conversion. Address books stored locally on your computer can be manually imported into Google following conversion.
