I would like to address Mr. Covino's comments in last week's issue of The Valley Reporter.
Fortunately, we now have the internet, so we can double check whenever someone casually throws out innuendos and numbers around. A click away on the WWW reveals that the U.S. government foreign aid in 2008 was around $26 billion, but that its ranking as a donor nation was only 17th on a per capital basis (see chart). So hardly enough of a sum that could "solve all our financial problems," as Mr. Covino believes. The U.S. can be more generous, and also find better ways to solve our financial problems, than by withdrawing aid to other countries.
